Marshall’s men grew in numbers today, as Halifax RLFC welcome youthful Back Rower, Mikey Wood to the ranks from Huddersfield Giants. England Academy forward, Mikey signed a loan deal that will keep him in the pack until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old played in both England Academy games this year against Australia and has been at Huddersfield Giants from scholarship level. Wood made it into the Superleague First Team in May, with Giants head coach Paul Anderson saying, “Mikey has been a standout figure throughout this club in his year group (..) His form now dictates that he is a player to invest further in and see if he can take the next step.
Head Coach, Richard Marshall spoke about the how Mikey’s loan with Halifax could help him as a player, “Tyler [Dickenson] has gone back a better player for the experience with us and Mikey wants to be able to adapt to a different style of play, too.” said Marshall.
“The work we did with Tyler, we will try to replicate with Mikey. He can also add value and an aspect of competition to us, giving us options in the back row. It will be brilliant for him personally to have the opportunity to experience Championship Rugby, particularly now, at the height of the season.”
Though Wood won’t be in stripes for this weekend’s double header game V Doncaster, his chance seems on the horizon to make his way in to the ‘Fax force. “He’s a big, rangy kid and he’ll get a chance to try and force his way into the team over the next few weeks.” Marshall divulged, adding, “Whilst I was at England Academy I could see Wood was certainly a good person to have in the camp. He’s a very impressive young man and I expect him to bring some youthful qualities to the squad.”
