There’s still time to put your best foot forward in the Sports industry! As we head into September, Calderdale College is still looking for a few final students to join the only official Halifax RLFC Academy, headed up by our very own Skipper Scott Murrell.
The course features a comprehensive Sports Diploma qualification, alongside professional training from sporting professionals, in state-of-the-art facilities. This gives students a fantastic grounding in fitness, nutrition, and coaching, which are all indispensable in sporting careers. Students also have the opportunity to resit key GCSEs alongside the course, so all students graduate with a well-rounded set of qualifications.
One familiar face who has already reaped the benefits of Halifax Academy, and begun his life in the spotlight is Halifax RLFC First Teamer, Will Calcott.
Starting out for Siddal ARLFC U13’s, Calcott found his footing in rugby and played for the local team until he switched to Illingworth U17’s. He made his way to his professional debut after pursuing our Academy course at Calderdale College, where he was one of many students to be scouted for the Halifax Reserves team, and later for the Halifax RLFC First Team. At just 20 years old, he’s played three professional games for Halifax, countless friendlies and was even scouted for a one-month loan spell at Championship side, Rochdale Hornets.
“Representing the Club against Leigh Centurions as part of the first team was definitely my proudest moment in rugby league” Will told us. Going on to comment, “I started on the bench and I was buzzing when they got me on the field. It’s really good to be back at ‘Fax after my loan deal at Rochdale too, I can’t wait to play again”
